Visualizing Temporality in Music
Initially influenced by the works of Iannis Xenakis, I regard music and visual shape as strongly interactive, where one can easily transfer information from one to another. My most recent compositions have been a sonic representation of a visual imagination, meanwhile a backward process seems relevant. Over the last few years, there have been several attempts to propose more efficient ways to internalize music, applying the concepts such as psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy. One beneficial tool is to use visual representation that reflects form and structure. This approach can be taken into consideration while proposing automated analytical tools to study music. My research proposes a fully automated music analysis tool in a form of visualization. Three musical features of loudness, density, and range will be necessary in order to design such a system. The low level features of frequency and duration are utilized in proposing a formal structure of the intended composition. Ultimately, this research project will be beneficial in analyzing a large number of musical examples such as instrumental repertoire, electro-acoustic music, improvisation and folklore music in a matter of seconds. Nevertheless, the main goal is to prepare visual material that can then be used in the compositional process.
